Why would you want to build a 2 x 18'' for kick?

Bass cab instead of kick horn would have been more accurate.

Compression ratio is one important thing to consider both with regards to cone strength but also it is important to match this to the specific driver to get optimum performance (May I suggest some simulations? ).
The lab horn uses small 12" woofers with strong cones and only a compression ratio of around 2:1 so that design should not have problems with durability.
Letterbox does not necessary have to increase the compression ratio, the whole point of it is actually to even out the load on the cone.
I do agree that doubling the compression ratio of the 186/1850 horn wouldn't be a good idea.
