The 2397 was JBL's 'smith horn'.
I have built one or two for monitors (god knows what happened to them).
A smiths horn is a horn based on this article:

A LA waveguide has a slightly different approach. The 'slot' is vertical.
The original is unsuitable for array use as it just has way too much dispersion in both planes.
I made a drawing which I posted for you which roughly tries to show how most LA waveguides look (only I scaled it up for your mids). You can spot the similarities.
