Help required for a Teacher in Wales

Hi I have just signed up and trawled some of the cabinet designs.

I am a teahcer in a school in South Wales with an AS class of budding docking station designers. I want to demonstrate how to create an attractive 3 way speaker system for the home, like a www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q= ... 80&bih=632

Are there any plans of this nature that I can inspire these lads to look beyond assemblying kits and more towards designing the speaker systems.

That is just what I was looking for. You have saved me a great deal of time and hassle. I want to inspire these 16-17year olds to consider music reproduction as a potential career. It is an area of design I have little experience of but a great deal of personal interest in. There is a simple amplifier kit that I use with students in year 9, 1.2W but connected to a decent speaker it knocks out reasonable sound. It gives the wow factor when they see a huge speaker powered of a 9V (smoke alarm) battery.

Do you mind if I pick your brains a little further with regard to the software when the time comes?

I intend to dismantle a Mission 2 way speaker and integrate this into my 3 way docking station. Input via a 3.5mm stereo jack amplifier a TDA2005 module www.quasarelectronics.com/3143-1 ... da2005.htm .

I have downloaded a copy of the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook - what I need now is experience in how to decide the volume required for specific speaker drivers(if I am using the correct terminology)

Chip amps can be used to get surprisingly good results. For more information on chip amps try doing a web search on 'gainclone'
Unfortunately dismanting a pair of speakers for the drivers will mean that you will not have the manufactuers data to enter into the enclosure simulating software. The Thiele-Small paramerers for a particular driver can be measured but it is a fairly technical process.

I hadn't heard of gainclone before. I use this site for schools www.kitronik.co.uk/stereoampkit.htm and I want to introduce sytems design into their folios as well as aesthetic design.

Is the volume of the enclosure critical in relation to the driver used? If so how can I calculate this?

Some of the pupils are using this driver www.rapidonline.com/netalogue/specs/35-2908e.pdf

Does this datasheet provide enough information for good quality testing at the end?

For simple sealed and reflex cabinets I use Winisd (see previous post)
