Can't really comment on huge amount of 2x18s typically used for huge gig.
However, to cover 500 person venue, with building shattering sub, from 13A sockets, 4x shorty mini scoops, or 4x 1850/V18-1000 small chamber full scoops are a winner every time.
The reason the MS18 & Rhino don't match shorty mini on SPL, is because they have uniform expansion.
Results in uber clean/accurate reproduction, but looses the efficiency/added SPL you get from bit of o' neg expansion.

Why do you think neg expansion can add SPL? With neg expansion you can make a band pass load, this can aid to go lower, but not add SPL. Do you have an example or a sim that can explain what you say?

how did you stack the 2x18" ? and where's the port?
Just because I simmed 2 b&c sub18 stacked in many different ways, and I get different results. In the worst situation a 2x18" could be beaten (or equal smiley2 ) by a single 1x18" miniscoop both loaded with the same driver and same voltage applied. However these are just my sim...spl measurement give the real answer.

here's my attempt same driver loaded same voltage applied 2pi placement 2,83v.

b&c sub 18 was 2 singles stacked one on top another with port on top. So there are one port in the middle of them and another on top. Mini is a mine design with a negative expansion and have exactly the same external dimension of 2 b&c sub18, I take care of driver distance from ground.

IF the port being floor coupled in the, "non horn favorite" cab is the secret, then the RCF 1018 has to be tried with a big boy driver.

Always being old 1850's don't work in reflex.
Seem to remember a reference reflex design for them on PD site? I think CVA used it?
V18-1000 in RCF1018, I wonder? Would make a very compact cab that has nice stack height either way round.
