From my own experience in the field, day after day.
Desktop:
Western Digital or Samsung
Hitachi
Seagate
Laptop:
Samsung by far
Hitachi
Western Digital
Toshiba (warranty a pain in arse)
Seagate
So I order a nice new Samsung drive for a laptop, what turns up? A bloody Seagate Momentus with a Samsung sticker.
Seagate have bought Samsung HDD business and now we get re-badged Momentus drives.
Grrrrrrr

Seems strange, much as I wouldn't give a smasung 3.5" or SSD house room, all the low-end (IE gamers) seem to rave about their pindle drives, personally Hitachi for 7k2 and seagate for 10/15K...
Sumsung had good market share...

They are all in a vicious consumer price driven market.
We all have favourites, but generally the engineering is driven by cost.

Due to the Japanese power plant melt down last year. A huge number of hard drives were produced there and now this production has had to go elsewhere. Hence the recent hike in prices.
Hopefully, the cheaper prices will return soon????? Capitalism eh!!!!!
